The Snake had been considered since biblical times as one of the forms of Satan, the embodiment of evil along with the Dragon, and symbolizing trouble, strife, and infertility. These are all misconceptions. The Snake’s true symbology is Wisdom, Reincarnation, Cunning, Healing, Spiritual Energy, Creation, Birth, Fertility, Phallacy, The Triple Goddess, and Earth’s Mysteries. On a shamanic journey, if the Snake appears, prepare to shed something in favor of something greater and better.

When shedding its skin, the Snake represents the life process of Birth, Death, and Rebirth. The Ouroboros represented the coiled energy within the Earth, and with her tail in her mouth she represented Infinity.

The Snake protected the entrance to the Otherworld and acted as a companion to the Gods. It represents the connection between the rivers and seas, as well as the Heavens and Earth.

In Scottish lore, the Adder symbolized Cailleach’s power. Tailiesin said in “The Fold of the Bards”, “I am a wiseman, I am a serpent”.

Druids in Wales were known as “Nadredd”. They carried amulets called “Gloicine Nathair” (Serpent Glass) which was said to be formed by snakes, but were most likely made with adder stone or blown glass.

Back in the days of St. Patrick, it was said that St. Patrick had run all the “Snakes” out of Ireland. This was not talking about the actual animals, for there are snakes in Ireland, though they are confined to the rugged western terrain. This saying was referring to when St. Patrick had converted a lot of pagans over to Christianity.

It is ironic that the last day of the Celtic Animal sign of the Snake is March 17th, as it is celebrated as St. Patrick’s Day. The start of this sign is February 18th, and is associated with the Ash tree, helping to temper irritability and nervousness.

Symbolizing The Warrior Spirit, Leadership, Direction, Fertility, Prophecy, Magic, Hospitality, Nature-based Wealth, Prosperity, Success, Protection, and Courage.

The Boar was once common in the British isles, and one of the important animals in Celtic art. It had been known for its cunning and ferocious behavior.

There had been a few Celtic tales about the Boar, such as the White Boar of Marvan, who sent inspiration to its master to write music and poetry. In the Arthurian legend, the Boar is depicted as one of Arthur’s foes, called Twrch Tnwyth.

The Boar Orc Triath was owned by Brigid.

The most popular animal in Celtic folklore and mythology, the Horse had been represented on many Celtic artifacts and coins, and the animal that is the most popular for Celtic noblemen to have symbols of when they go into battle (and some were most likely riding them into battle too).

The Horse was at first hunted as a food source, until finally domesticated in 3,000 BC in Western Europe. It had been said that a man who could take the reigns of a Horse held power in his hands, though a lot of Celtic Gods had Horses for their companions, as they had been known for their beauty, speed, vitality, and fertility, and being linked to the night, mystery, and magic.

Irish Deity Mananna Mac Lir had a horse named Splendid Mane, who ran swifter than the spring wind and traveled as swiftly on water as on land. The Dadga had a black horse by the name of Ocean. Cuchulain had two horses who were foaled on the same day he was born, Black of Sainglend and Grey of macha. When Cuchulain was about to go on his final foray, Grey at first refused to be bridled, and shed tears of blood. But during battle, Grey was mortally wounded, but managed to kill 50 soldiers with his teeth, and 30 more with his hooves before he died.

Of the other Celtic Dieties, the Horse is most associated with the Goddess Epona (who we may have gotten “pony” from), and with Rhiannon, who is often in tales riding a white horse.

The word “nightmare” does indeed derive from a female horse. It was said that these bad dreams were brought to dreamers by a visiting horse from Epona or Mare.

The Rabbit symbolizes Alertness, Nurtruring, Transformation, The Receiving of Hidden Teachings, Intuitive Messages, Fear, Moon Magic, Fertility, Speed, Swiftness, Longevity, Good Fortune, Courage, Strength.

The Hare symbolizes Rebirth, Regeneration, Adaptation, Intuition, Rejuvination, Ressurection, Balance, Fertility.

The Hare is associated with the Celtic Tree sign of the Willow, which is associated with the Moon. The dates for this sign are April 15th to May 12th. It helps you touch upon all mysterious aspects of nature and its association with the moon.

The Hare is associated with the war goddess Andraste, whose name means “The Invincible One”. Her presence was evoked on the eves of battles for her favor. Boadiccea, a warrior woman, had made sacrifices to Andraste in order to have the goddess aid her in battle against the Romans. Boadiccea also used the movements of Hares or Rabbits for divination before her last battle against the Romans.

The Rabbit is one of the symbols of the goddess Eostre, or Ostara. She was seen as Spring personified, the Godddess of Rebirth, New Beginnings, and Fertility. The word “estrus”, meaning animal period, derives from her name, as she was also the Goddess of Animal Reproduction. Another holiday that derives from her name is the Christian holiday of Easter.

As The Rabbit had been long associated with Good Luck, its amputated foot would become a portable symbol of good luck and good fortune.
